Banner Lake parcel, Hobe Sound: county land headed for affordable housing

Martin County started a land use change on a 2.09-acre county lot west of SE Lantana Ave in Hobe Sound so the Community Land Trust can build affordable housing there. Approved to begin on 2026-10-13.

Where it stands

The County Commission voted on 2026-10-13 to start the process (Resolution 26-10.2, approved on the consent agenda). This is the first step. The new land use and zoning, and how many homes they allow, come back later at public hearings.

What's proposed

A vacant 2.09-acre county lot in Hobe Sound, north of the Pine School, south of the Banner Lake Club, east of Banner Lake and west of SE Lantana Avenue. The county got it from the Pine School in 2007 in a road abandonment deal.

  • Today it is Institutional-General land use and PS-2 Public Service zoning. That allows no homes at all.
  • The plan is to switch it to a land use that allows homes, with a matching Hobe Sound CRA zoning district, so it can go to the Martin County Community Land Trust for affordable housing.
  • How many homes isn't stated yet.

Background

The County Commission put this lot on its list of properties for the Community Land Trust on 2024-11-12 (Resolution 24-11.3). The lot is inside the Hobe Sound Community Redevelopment Area.

Who's behind it

Martin County (requested by the Assistant County Administrator).
