Sheriff's shooting range: Martin County starts a land use change on 57 acres

Where it stands
The County Commission voted on 2026-10-13 to start the process (Resolution 26-10.1, approved on the consent agenda). This is only the first step. The actual land use change, and a rezoning that goes with it, come back later at public hearings.
What's proposed
The county owns about 57 acres at the northeast corner of SW 84th Avenue and SW Busch Street, bought in 2002, used for the Sheriff's shooting range and training.
| Today | Proposed | |
|---|---|---|
| Land use | Agricultural Ranchette | Institutional (county policy requires county-owned institutional sites to carry this designation) |
| Zoning | A-2, Agricultural | A matching rezoning, district not yet named |
Why it matters to neighbors
- A new road through the site. A site plan now under review includes new road right-of-way through the property. That strip is left out of the land use change.
- Water and sewer. The site was approved in 2017 for public water and sewer, even though it is outside the county's main urban service district.
- What gets built isn't stated. The county's documents don't describe new buildings.
Who's behind it
Martin County, through the Growth Management Department.
